November Meeting

Railroad History Presentation

Please join us for an informative lecture on the subject of Railroads in New Mexico at the Dawn of the Nuclear Age. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, “Chili Line” and other famous railroads played an important role in the 1940’s development of the Atomic Bomb.

Scientists arrived in Santa Fe by rail, the steel container called “Jumbo” was transported to the Trinity Site by the Santa Fe Railway Company and several historic depots and structures in the state had roles to play during World War II.

Our presenter will be Fred Friedman, a recognized New Mexico territorial and state railroad historian. Fred has appeared on platforms like C-SPAN, where he has discussed the significance of railroads in shaping the history and economy of New Mexico. In addition to managing the State Railroad Bureau for decades, Mr. Friedman has been a railroad accident investigator and an expert witness in numerous railroad accident cases.

Please make your reservations no later than Thursday,  Oct 31, 2024, by calling or texting Berta Wagstaff at 505-710-4448 or emailing her at vets4vets@aol.com.  When you RSVP, please indicate if you will be joining us for lunch.

Town Hall Meetings

Dear friends,

Donna Simek, Chair of the International Board of Directors, and Jeremi Snook, CEO & President of Friendship Force International, would like to invite you to a discussion with FFI leaders. These town hall-style meetings are informal opportunities for members to ask the Board of Directors questions and hear about the changes underway at Friendship Force as we navigate our future together.

Town hall meetings are designed to give people in every time zone an opportunity for engagement throughout the year and the meetings are open to all active members. Translation assistance may be made available, should that be needed.  View meetings times and register below.

Join us October 16 to 23 for

an outbound journey to FFQC.

Program Fee=$240. FFI Fee=$175.

The Friendship Force Quad Cities is happy to welcome ambassadors from Friendship Force of Western Colorado for an exciting week exploring our bi-state area. Some of what you will have to look forward to is described below:

• Putnam Museum, Davenport, Iowa – History, science, world cultures, QC Inventors exhibit, and more will await your exploration.

• Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) – An active U.S. Army installation located on a 946-acre island in the Mississippi River. After a brief background check (State ID required) we will be free to visit the Arsenal Museum, Colonel Davenport House, the National and Confederate Cemetery and Lock and Dam 15.

• Celebration Belle Luncheon Cruise on the Mississippi – We will enjoy a full hot meal including coffee, tea, and dessert or something from the cash bar. Imagine yourself cruising down the Mississippi, admiring the colors of nature all around you. Beautiful scenery abounds as you float up and down the river while in the background the great sounds of music from the 40’s to the present.

• Make a Memory – We will all gather for a fun activity to make a souvenir of the Quad Cities to take home.

• Buffalo Bill Museum, LeClaire, Iowa – We will visit this quaint river town and visit the Buffalo Bill Museum and hopefully spend some time in the unique gift shops, and Mississippi River Distilling Company. Your visit to LeClaire, Iowa would not be complete without a trip to the popular TV show “American Pickers”. You can stop into the Local shop called the Antique Archeology. The physical location features tourist trinkets from printed tees to collectible keychains and a visit to the actual garage where episodes are filmed for the show!

• Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, West Branch, Iowa – We will visit the birthplace of the 31st President and the only President from Iowa. 2024 is the 150th Birthday Celebration.

• Amana Colonies – We plan to visit the Amana Heritage Museum and other local interests in the colonies as time allows before enjoying some authentic German food.

• Deere Wiman House and Butterworth Center – We will spend some time on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities touring these historic homes that originally belonged to John Deere descendants.

• Quad City Botanical Center, Rock Island, IL – We will tour the beautiful QC Botanical Center and enjoy an educational program.

• Isabel Bloom Sculpture Studio, Davenport, IA – We will enjoy a behind the scenes look at the production of these popular sculpture pieces and learn the history of this unique art.
